"TIKU" is our Finnish import of 2005 from kennel Dakarai in Salo, Finland. His mother is our very own Finnish  Ch.Calypso Double Dares Bulldobas ("Barbi"), who was exported to kennel Bulldobas several years ago, to be co-owned by Tiina Taavitsainen and Sanna-Majia Virtanen. Her ownership has since reverted exclusively to S-M. We had been looking forward to a puppy from our beloved Barbi, a brindle whose quality matches those of our very own stellar "Vogue" (Ch.Calypso Dressed To Kill)...hmmm, could there be some magic in those letter "D" girls? At least in the case of those two girls we got what we like to think are basenji girls of the highest caliber, possessing great style.

Tiku's sire, Bulldobas Phantom,  is a litter brother to the first dog to whom Barbi was first bred (Fin.Ch. Bulldobas Phoebus).  We were hoping in Phantom to bring the size of the pups down some from the first litter, and so far that is true. Tiku is the same size as the two boys we kept from our in-home breedings this year, neither of whom come from combinations that could ever be expected to produce oversized dogs. We love the attributes that Phantom's bloodlines bring to ours, and look forward to years of fun with Tiku's contributions to future Calypso progeny.

Tiku has lovely wrinkle, including side wrinkle when he has his ears positioned just right. His head is everything I could want... beautiful little wedge of the just-right proportions. He is very square, and old-fashioned in his architecture: moderate in all things. No extreme angles, no swan neck, no whippet rear, no 'seats 8' tabletop stretching out between the shoulders and hips. He's a tad short-stationed right now, and might remain that way. If so, he comes by it honestly - our own foundation bitch, Flair, had the same proportions which you can compare for yourself by visiting her page.   We use this characteristic to good advantage as it allows us to breed the basenjis with more leg, more length and still have stock to blend back in order to keep our line from becoming "extreme" - mile high fronts to make room for whippet rears...and losing the essence of the little African bush dog that has been such a successful athlete for thousands of years in his natural form. Why 'improve' on Nature's own design?

Sanna-Maija had decided upon a fantasy or fairy tale theme for the names of her "T" litter. Hmmmm, Susan toyed with a name from The Lord of the Rings trilogy, but then one night, she remembered her trip to Guatemala with Tux for FCI shows, and that the name of the hotel she'd stayed in was based on Guatemala's most famous Mayan heritage site, the pyramids at Tikal. Voila ! She had her name for Barbi's puppy.  "Tiku" is the Finnish nickname given to Tikal by Sanna-Maija, and it is the name he goes by at home. A return trip to GUA is planned (just one???) for the near future, and when  Tiku is old enough to show internationally, he will most certainly  visit his Tante Maria Elisa Alvarez and her Lazarus kennels, our dear friend in The Land of Eternal Spring.

[Special thanks to our own in-house designer, Kevin, for the FANTASTIC logo he designed for Tiku. The logo is a stylistic representation of the most famous of the pyramids at Tikal, El Grande Jaguar, pictured above. Please note that the pyramid is FAR larger than our image conveys because the superimposition of Tiku's photo on the pyramid image destroys the real perspective.  Of course, Tiku has not really been to Guatemala yet, but he will be attending their international shows some day when he is old enough.
When he actually gets to visit Tikal, he will be a teensy blip on any photos taken that manage to include all of Grande Jaguar! In the meantime, perhaps some Mayan charm will rub off on their unique little namesake...]

To the right, Tiku shows off his best feature, his lovely wrinkles!

Below is pictured Tikal and his "peeps" (hee hee), cousins Calypso Jon Bon Jovi (black/white) and Calypso KissKiss BangBang (brindle) with Daddy Kevin. Tiku, Jon & Shooter are quite the Treasure Chest for us, such wonderful pups in looks and personality. An embarrassment of riches, to be sure. The boys get along fabulously and do Everything together. We are delighted that they have found each other to be such good company!

The picture below was taken in Finland before Tiku left the country. He is about 3 months old  here.
