Tux had been showing nearly all his life, it seems!
After some time with Susan in the States, he flew back to
the Pacific Northwest to co-breeder Terray Boomir and began
his Canadian title pursuit. This quickly accomplished, he
began to be shown in the States, but a bizarre turn of
events involving his handler/caretaker and drug usage
resulted in an over-the-border rescue/dognapping operation
to get an emaciated Tux back to Terray. Tux physically
recovered, but has had certain issues associated with
caretaking ever since.
Tux was the consummate professional traveler and show
dog. He rarely did not give 100% in the ring, and was
always on his best behavior on the road and in the air. He
rather fancied himself traveling royalty, I think,
rewarding his lackeys and punishing those he thought were
failing in their duties to him! hee hee! He got along
amazingly well with other stud dogs in his international
travels, engaging in playful, puppylike behavior that he
would have found embarrassing and appalling at home in front of
the other basenjis.
Tux had 'his' women all over the world, being a
shameless gigolo (hmmm, his sire's name!). He worked his
magic and brainwashed new converts into his Fan Club with a
practiced ease. That black, silky coat, those dark
fudge-colored eyes, that tightly curled tail that wiggles
just so.... resistance was futile!
Tux's
daughters, I think, are going to be his legacy.
They are uniformly ultra-feminine, with lovely little wedge
heads and ultra-dark eyes. He passed on his nice tail curl.
I think the influence of his mother, Akuaba 'n' Terrarust
Eclipse, is paramount here. She is, I think, the
top-producing black/white basenji bitch in the world, with
multiple BIS winners produced from a variety of studs. There are now
some grandpups who have caught my eye and fancy, premier among
them Calypso Jon Bon Jovi. He is an improvement on his stellar grandparent and I have no doubt will carry the legacy forward in style.
Tux's color, black with only the minimal required white,
comes through his sire, a
very plain dark red dog. Most American judges do NOT like a
plain dog, although none of the International judges gave
this a second thought.
As many American breeders have found out, too much
white leads to WHITE basenjis with some color patches, and
a BLUE EYE here and there!!!! Basenjidom's plain dogs are
invaluable in all breeding programs, and I tend to keep
plain boys here at Calypso. I have no desire to produce
blue eyes or white basenjis! A breeding program that is
starting to produce basenjis with the color and the white
trim nearly equal to each other can benefit from a plain
dog like Tux, or others like him.
In 2004, Tux tested low thyroid (free T4) and had been on thyroid
supplementation ever since. He was asymptomatic except for sterility.
4 Sept. 2004: Tux made a rare appearance back in the show ring at the
special Veterans competiton at the Durham KC show in Raleigh's Labor
Day Weekend circuit. 2 months shy of his 11th birthday, this total
professional added two more rosettes to his collection: Best of Breed
& Houng Group 1st -Veterans.
The judges could NOT believe his age - Tux has very few grey hairs, and
his movement has no diminished power or reach. What a pleasure to get
this SHOW DOG back into the ring! He loved it so much!
End
of life: Tux died from a particularly aggressive oral melanoma - well,
actually I had him euthanized before it could cause him pain and
diminish that arrogant spirit of entitlement that I knew to be my Tux.
I absolutely did not want him to be forced to surrendur to anyone or
anything. He lived his life firmly believing himself to be Master of
All, and he died hearing the people around him giving him his customary
compliments. As he deserved. Farewell my Travel Buddy. I cannot begin
to describe my sense of loss... susan
