CALYPSO

Grounds And Kennels

As long as the weather is welcoming, the basenjis of Calypso are outside enjoying it!  There is a converted horse barn that has 5 indoor/outdoor runs on its south side. The footing is concrete block over gravel, and because we’re on a hillside, the drainage is excellent. The runs are  5 ft wide x 40 ft long.  The indoor sleeping areas are 3’x4’.  The dogs are kenneled, usually in boy/girl pairs, although we have youngsters who get along well in same sex pairings.

To the west of the main runs are 4 “portable” runs (because the runs are not sunk into the earth, they can be taken apart and moved easily) that are also concrete block over gravel. Their dimensions are 8’wide x 16’ long.  All the runs are covered in sun shades in the hot months, opened to the sky in cooler months so the dogs can enjoy basking in the full sun.  The portables have large “dogloo” dog houses to shelter the dogs in case of rain showers, but primarily, all the dogs houses in every run merely serve as protection  and shade for the water buckets!

We are infamous for the dogs’ chairs… originally put in the runs so we would have a place to sit while we visit and play with the dogs, the basenjis quickly put them to their own uses… besides being a perch, the plastic chairs are giant chew toys. The basenjis will gnaw the chairs down to the point of being just a chair seat – no arms, legs or anything else!  The chairs as chew toys worked out better than conventional toys because the dogs do not fight over them – they can often be seen cooperatively dismantling the same chair!    (sigh)

Spring in the Carolinas is a beautiful time of year, and here it is no different.

Here are some of my favorite pictures : The Pond In Spring (above),  a view of a blooming quince bush and some of our zillions of daffodils, & puppy/flowers! February 1st is when the daffodils usually start blooming and it’s also when the winter puppies get to come out for their first outings. The pups love to crash and leap through our precious blooms which are miraculously resilient and regain their posture some hours after these attacks.
