***New Champion !!! Jon's daughter, Calypso Lorelei of Apex, finished her titlle August 12, 2007 in Greensboro, NC handled by Kim Byrd (Jon's handler as well). Lorelei finished with 3 majors, just like Jon. She also passed her CERF that weekend, and her fanconi linkage test came back "Clear". Only her OFA hip test to go (her thyroid profile in March was normal). Congratulations co-owner Gary Pickler of North Carolina, and to Kim for yet another great job!

Jon @ 18 mos. 5pt major win under j. Wm Cunningham, Carroll County KC/Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club/BCOA-supported entry (May 2006). Agent: Kim Byrd.

CALYPSO JON BON JOVI is the lead puppy of the 'keeper boys' of the 2004 litters. We had planned on sending him out to a show home elsewhere, but this boy has a way of taking up residence in your heart, and so NO surprise: Calypso remained " home" for Jon-boy.

Jon had all the advantages that come from being the "singleton" star in a litter of one : his mother's undivided attention and devotion. "Xi" is our resident Benevolent Despot and she was fresh off her job as mentor to our new Benin import, Avuvi Afonhaan when Jon was born.  Xi is a steady and reasonable basenji, with a good head on her shoulders. She is very much like her own mother, Glemyr Calypso Fantasia, who in turn is very much like HER sire, Ch Calypso American Gigolo ("Rhett"). Rhett is our favorite boy of all time. It is easy for us to see so much of Rhett coming through Jon in this puppy's happy, outgoing nature and his absolute acceptance of whatever it is that we ask  of him.

In looks and personality, Jon is also very much his father, Draken. That fabulous rear and leggy look are Draken, through and through. Those nearly black eyes and perfect wedge head come along his dam's line very strongly.  From both Tux's dam, Eclipse, and back to our foundation bitch, Flair (see a beautiful headstudy of her on our Home page), Jon had more than enough contributors to insure him a place among our best.

Early on, we also saw more than a hint of the prima donna personality of Grandpa Tux. However,  we worked through those "delusions of entitlement" issues  without sacrificing that inborn, supreme self confidence that served world traveler &  internationally-titled Tux so well.  Jon found out that it is ok to have a Boss or two because he is still treated like a prince!

Very masculine and leggy, with the family trait of a hard level topline, Jon's  development has been perfectly proportionate so far, with no evidence of the normal teenaged awkwardness for these growing months.  He gives every indication that he is going to be sound and spectacular - as befitting a dog with a name such as his to live up to -  Rock on, Jon!  (and thanks to Uncle Lee Fairleigh for naming Jon.  Backstage pass for you, boy!)

We're having fun this year with a trio of boy pups - all born within 4 days of each other, separate litters. You see them pictured to the right. Each one of them is sweet as pie, but you can imagine the energy levels involved! We're so thankful to live in the South where it's warm enough for the boys to be outside together most of the time, working off all that  Big "E".

Jon debuted in the show ring right at 6 months up in Salem,VA at a delightful summer mountain circuit that has a huge puppy match included. I thought it would be a great long weekend for Jon & Shooter, and we stayed in the home of one of the Calypso family members, Dawn Fritts, who also has Jon's maternal grandmother, "Annie" (Glemyr-Calypso Fantasia). We had a great weekend. Jon got RWD each of the 3 shows, Shooter beat him in the puppy match (not entered in the regular shows so he had to win SOMETHING to show up his cousin!), and then he went home to do some serious growing up.

It was decided to bring him out to make a serious run at his AKC championship in spring 2006. The weekend after Kevin & Melissa's wedding, (official) show #4 at the Myrtle Beach KC in Waccamaw, NC - Win #1, 2pts. We handed him off to Kim Byrd of Kisa basenjis whom he'd met and fell in love with at the Salem shows. They renewed their affaire de coeur and except for one RWD "blip" on the road to fame, they have been an unbeatable combination!  Win #2 came at Bucks Co. KC for 3pts + going BOS over 2 dog Specials under judge Lila Wadsworth. The RWD came the next day under Ohio's David Miller at Trenton. Win #4 came the weekend of the Mid-Atlantic Basenji Club's annual specialty__4pts under Dr Gareth Morgan-Jones at Mattaponi KC in Manassas, VA, then #5 the next day at the supported entry at Carroll County in Westminster, MD under judge William Cunningham (not known for putting up black & whites!) for 5pts.  The title-finishing 2 pt win came at Langley KC's May 27th show under judge Al Krause.
To summarize: as a 6 month old pup, Jon got 3 RWD's his first 3 times in the ring. On the actual run to his title, he was defeated only once, but still got RWD. He finished with 3 majors. His run began April 30 and finished May 27th.  I guess I was justified in refusing to sell this remarkable pup.   Intentions are to take him overseas to compete for his FCI championship to follow in the footsteps of his illustrious grandfathers: FCI, FIN, SWE, NOR Ch. Bulldobas Whipper-Snapper & our own FCI, AM, BLR, CAN, FIN, GUA, GrC-GUA, LTV, RUS CH. Terrarust Calypso Black Tie, EuA-02.  He's certainly got the genes for it.   And in the words of his namesake's latest album, HAVE A NICE DAY !!!    (bon jovi's "Have A Nice Day", released 2005)

Pictured at  4 mos:  Jon, Tiku & Shooter

Jon's cousins /  best friends are 1) Dakarai Tikal Calypso (red/white), called "Tiku". He comes from Salo, Finland and his mother is our very own "Barbi"  (FIN Ch. Calypso Double Dares Bulldobas), truly one of the most beautiful brindle bitches around.  Buddy #2 is a boy we have waited an awfully long time to welcome to Calypso, our very own stripey show boy, and wow - has he been worth the wait! Calypso KissKiss BangBang is known to us as "Shooter", and if he's going to shoot anybody, it will be through the heart - this is one sweetheart you'll not be able to resist. His color and striping look handpainted,  and the the three of these boys together with all their charm and good looks are truly an embarrassment of riches. But hey - I'm being too modest!   No, all kidding aside, these boys are a dream come true, and all at once. Collectively they are our Treasure Chest, though we don't want them to get swelled heads  and lose their sweet baby ways, so we call them No Neck & The Reform School Boyz, and try to pretend that they are a big pain in the butt.  Sometimes it actually works...

[Tiku and Shooter have their own pages, and are listed with Jon in the directory for DOGS AT HOME on our main page.]

Photo of Jon at 6mos. by Dawn Fritts. Location: beautiful Dunlap Creek in Covington, VA. Behind Jon is the stone foundation of Virginia's oldest covered bridge, The Humpback. It was first built in the 1820's, but floods twice destroyed the bridge, and this is the 3rd incarnation of the 100-foot span bridge over this tributary of the Jackson, then Cowpasture Rivers which contribute to the formation of the James River which flows into the Atlantic ocean. Jon and I can attest that Dunlap Creek has mosquitoes as big as birds! At least, that is how they looked and felt during this VERY brief photo session during which Jon posed like a good sport... 'bye, Bridge!  'Bye, pretty creek! We are outta here and back into the car!'
