Here's the newest addition to Calypso family! Legend is a
'rescue' that we got back from the ex-owners.
He shows himself... got that
from Daddy Trapper and multi-BIS-winning grandpa, Dial... just goes
around like a train,
head held high, and that short, level back never softens. Both of his
granddads are former #1 basenjis; grandma M'Bliki, of course,
is straight out of the jungle; Cruz was a ranked bitch and
produced 10 champions of her own, so Mr Legend has rather nice breeding
behind him.
We thought how much fun it would be to get this boy, originally sold
into a show home, finally into the ring at last, and so registered him
with AKC (orig'l owners hadn't even done that!), had his hips x-rayed
for submission to OFA, and had his eyes examined for CERF. He came
through with flying colors! Off to the first dog shows - we did 3. And
every time he was put up on the table, he started grumbling!
I wish he and I could have a
conversation because I have no idea what his gripe is! He doesn't growl
on the examination table at home....!?! Legend is a VERY
talkative dog, offering opinions on just about everything, so we are
accustomed to his vocalizations of all manner. He is not a 'silent' dog
by any means. So rather than have his conversation misinterpreted, we
pulled him from showing rather than have him disqualified for offering
unwelcome opinions to approaching strangers!
Worth mentioning are the 3 judges who know
dogs well enough (and basenjis!) to recognize a put-on when they see
one! Judy Webb, Joe Purkhizer and Dee Maltz all laughed at the
grumbler, looked him in the eye and informed him in so many words -"you
are not all that, buddy!" and proceeded to go over him without
incident, and he never budged. A fourth time however, and Mr.
Dale was not prepared to face criticism from a mere canine and
the 'legend in his own mind' was invited to keep his opinions to
himself in his own place in his own time! So Legend returned to
his fun of meeting strangers OUTSIDE the ring without having to break
his routine and submit to this show junk. !? Who knows what goes
through this dog's mind????
At home, Legend is roomie to stripey princesses Toffee and her
daughter, Tyger. The latter is a pure stick of dynamite, and she and
Legend spend their days wrestling and chasing each other all over
creation. I get exhausted just watching them! Now that Tyger
has begun lure coursing and LGRA racing, we're thinking of introducing
her buddy Legend to racing, at least. He is very feral with regards to
the
wildlife around here, and will chase Tyger without end. We can put the
old boy to some use and find an appropriate outlet for all of his
energy!
