'Sunny' was the pup we kept from our breeding of the
pure-for-red bitch Ch Calypso Blaze of Glory to the 1/2
African brindle son of Avongara Gangura, Kibushi Get Sirius
'Chris'.
Kibushi Get Sirius "Chris" - Top-producing 1/2 African in the USA. Died age 15 years,
2004.
Sunny was not the best quality pup in her
litter - I kept her because of her reticent personality and
my fear that an inexperienced basenji owner would not know
how to get the most out of her, character-wise. In fact, the owners of
one of her sisters failed to
properly supervise and firmly lead the headstrong african,
resulting in serious aggression that went undeterred. Such
is the consequence that well-meaning but non-Alpha basenji
owners visit upon their dogs.
 Sunny autumn'2004
Sunny is a beautifully
brindled gal with a loving
personality. Her tail is the loose African variety which
kept her from the show ring, and her tail set is also low,
but Sunny has brought many positive qualities to her pups,
not the least of which is her dominant genetics for that
lovely brindle patterning. She is not capable, it seems, of
producing striping that is not absolutely lovely!
Sunny was bred 2x to our
half-African M'Bliki son,
Reveille Calypso Trapper. Two pups went to the Japanese
home of Dr and Mrs Sato outside Tokyo in the Gumma
prefecture. The male, Toranaga, was a TRUE tiger-striped
brindle. Overall, the breedings with Trapper produced the
best temperaments that Trappper's breedings ever produced.
However, oversized males and males and females with loooong
backs made them unsuitable for the show ring. Also, it
became apparent that this combination brought out a genetic
'nic' for undershot bites. sigh.
Sunny was bred 2x to
Multi-Ch Bullodobas Whipper-Snapper
of Finland. The first time was via artificial insemination
using frozen semen. Of those total 9 pups, one undershot bite was
produced, only. Full white or predominantly white collars on
the brindles was produced. Interestingly, the brindles were
all girls, the reds were all boys. How many actually make it into
the show ring depends... two of the brindle girls inherited
Sunny's African shyness around strangers. Like their jungle
relatives, they prefer to meet folks on their own terms and
in their own time. This is not possible in a show ring
where a stranger strides up to your face, grabs your mouth
and then proceeds to -sometimes- roughly poke and prod your
body without permission! Needless to say, reactionary
behavior on the part of these horrified ladies will not
make them promising show dogs!
What we have gotten from
this Aatu/Sunny combination is
a United Nations of a pedigree, combining the ancient
African bloodlines with old, respected bloodlines from the
US, Australia, England and Finland. So much can be built on such a
combination pedigree! Interestingly, in the 8th generation
are common American ancestors, so the 'twain DOES meet!
This winter Sunny was bred last time, to CH Possum Creek's Just My Luck - and 8th December'04 four brindle puppies were born, 2 boys and 2 girls!
