'Lady' is one of our Rhett (Ch Calypso American Gigolo)
daughters who carried his deep color and mascara gene. She
is dominant for passing it on. The picture chosen for her
illustrates this in her look-alike son, Calypso Carolina
Cooler (sire: Ch Calypso Kilimanjaro).
Lady's physique was very
much more like her mother, Ch
Calypso Bossanova - very slight of build, and not enough
rear angulation for competitive showing. However, her
genetics alone were reason enough for me to keep her for
our breeding pool. It has just been a matter of finding the
stud with whom this genetic material nicked - we found him
in our 'Aatu' son, CALYPSO B'AATU BIG SIR. We liked the
first litter enough that we are repeating it spring 2003,
and then Lady retired to her retirement home in central North Carolina.
She deserves all the
love and attention and spoiling with which she will be
showered.
Lady's temperament is
above reproach. She is submissive,
happy, loving and doting. She is the epitome of the word
SWEET. Her pups are just like her. True to her place in
the world as a BASENJI bitch, she can be vindictive when
she is not getting the attention she thinks she deserves,
so she bears watching when it seems as if SHE might think
she is being slighted!
What we've gotten from
Rhett and down through this daughter
has been the masking gene which produces the rich red color
and very generous mascara marking around the eyes. The
'egyptian' exotic look comes easily to Lady's progeny, and
we hope that her son, 'Kulta' whom we kept from 2001's
litter sired by B'Aatu will continue to pass this trait
along. He and his sister, Fizz, also inherited their
mothers non pareil temperament for which we are eternally
grateful. This duo is filled with joy, and love and life,
and whenever we are around them, laughter is the 'letter'
of the day!
Now that Lady is retired from being a Calypso "mom", she has gone to
some dear friends of ours over on North Carolina's beautiful Lake
Norman for her 'golden years'. Joni and Mike Compton and their two sons
already have another Calypso basenji, tri-colored "Fudge" (Calypso
Jamocha Fudge). Fudge is a full brother to Lady, just from the previous
breeding of parents Rhett & Bossanova. We are thrilled for
Lady to have been welcomed into such a wonderful basenji home where we
know the second half of her life is going to be just great!
