'MacGyver' was another Rhett son, litter brother to Burt (Ch Calypso
Evening Shade). Mac wass Kevin's personal dog, and his first
basenji. He finished his championship shortly while Kevin was serving 3
tours of duty in
Saudi Arabia during Desert Storm. Kevin was part of the stealth
fighter jet support group.
Kevin took Mac through basic obedience training, but has never competed
with him. Humiliation in the obedience ring 'at the hands' of Ch
Calypso American Express soured him on taking the chance of future
humiliation-by-basenji in the obedience ring again - Faint of
Heart!!!!
Mac was very vocal and had such pure tonality that he shattered
glass one time when he "bugled". There is no way to describe what he
did as
mere yodeling - it was strident and clear, and if you were standing
directly in the path of the sound waves at ear level, he would
literally
ring your 'bell' and cause you timpanic pain!
He also had a
fetish about his butt, and the girls at Calypso teased him
unmercifully!
Mac would do anything to keep the other dogs from sniffing his butt -
and they knew it. Consequently, all of them DID it, and this sent Mac
into paroxysms of angst and indignity. He would whirl around and bugle
and vocalize and huff. All we did was laugh, and the dogs never paid
any
attention to this fussbudget. He was a funny guy! We liked to say that
Mac was an old lady from the 30's come back reincarnated... all he
needed was a flowered frock, matching hat/shoes/gloves, and a stern
visage to
complete the look. And he was generally referred to around here as 'The
Old Lady', or Tacky-Wacky. I'm sure he will come back to haunt
us for all
this. :0
Well, now we will find
out - Mac was euthanized on July 9,2005 at the end of a long battle
with cancer. He never seemed to be suffering, but had finally reached
the point where he would tip over trying to potty, and spent most of
his time sleeping. He was frighteningly skeletal, but chowed down his
meals and had normal stools. We didn't want to wait until he began to
experience pain, and when dehydration set in, we knew that organ
failure would not be far behind. We took him into the vet together, and
he slipped across the Rainbow Bridge peacefully to join his family. It
is sad to see an old friend go, but good to save them from any
suffering. Mac was 13 1/2 yrs old at his death. He lived a good long
life.
