My most wonderful girl! People often question if a dog is as good as
it's picture, and I always got similar comments about Vogue from people
seeing her in the flesh for the first time: "I wondered if she was this
good in real life - she's better!"
What is special about this photo is that it is two months after this
little girl was nearly dead from some horrific virus contracted at a
dog show. Within 72 hours of her first bout of diarrhea, she had gone
from 19 down to 11 pounds in weight. She refused to eat the
prescription diet sent home by the Vet, and was too weak to stand,
could barely lift her head. She had just flown back home from Oklahoma,
and here she was, just a week later, at death's door! My beautiful
baby, and one of the most feisty puppies I have ever had the pleasure
of welcoming into the world, was now but a spark of life, and I was NOT
going to let it be snuffed! It was because of Vogue's needs that I
learned to do at home what would bring many another dog back from the
edge.... I started hourly oral fluid
administration using a syringe filled with electrolyte supports. Eight
times a day, she was spoon-fed Danon vanilla yogurt mixed with fruit
baby food equalling 1 cup. I took off work to minister to her, and then
started bringing her to the office so care could continue. She began
hydrating on her own in a week, but the weight loss remained, and she
would not eat independently. For the next 2 1/2 months, I handfed
Vogue until she reached the point you see in this picture. She would
never eat on her own, and so I had to sit her on top of a dog house
that she would not try to jump from, and putting the little 1 cup
measuring cup next to her, feed her mouthful by mouthful, every day,
for months.
The week before this picture was taken, she debuted back in the show
ring, going Best of Breed from the classes. No one would believe me
that this lovely creature had ever looked anything other than
exquisite. I am so thankful that her owner never saw her
when she was in crisis - a truly frightening sight. I shed many a tear
in absolute fear and despair during those darkest hours. But I would
not give up and Vogue was too ornery to just lay down and die. She
fought everything I tried to do for her, probably just on the principle
of the thing. She was one of 8 of the most headstrong, physically
active litters I have ever bred. Playtime with the "D" litter meant
wearing gardening gloves to barely protect my hands from this pack of
pirhanas who chomped on everything, everyone, and each other. They
flung themselves through the air like trapeze artists, just for the joy
of flying, however briefly. I cannot tell you the number of times I got
smacked in the side or back of the head by an airborn puppy! They
were their own mother, Calypso American Express, all over again, and
jacked up about 50 notches. I have never, before or since, had a litter
that so captivated and consumed me, and who sucked all the available
energy from the world around them for their own use. Singly or as a
group, they were larger than life, and I was in awe of their power. And
each one was a huge challenge to their owners. Even in old age, they
continue their imperious reigns!
Vogue was a top bitch in the US when she was being shown, and she was
very very difficult to show. Vogue loved the show ring but
was a big mover for a bitch, and small breed rings aren't
very accomodating to such a dog, unlike the huge group
rings. Still, she captured the attention of judges
everywhere and really got attention for tri's (as most
American judges complain about unclear coats and smutty
coloring), and bitches who are standard-sized and
ultra-feminine.
Vogue was chosen by the
BCOA breed standard committee and
AKC's breed standards committee for the AKC basenji breed
standard video. Throughout the video, Vogue is showcased as
representing: the ideal basenji bitch, the ideal tri, and
as having the most desirable front & rear.
As we used
to say in her advertisements:
"Strike a pose, there's nothing to it: VOGUE !"
