**Barbi now has 2 champion offspring in Finland**
Barbi came to Finland in May 2001 for Tiina Taavitsainen
(kennel Bulldobas) who then placed this wonderful girl to
live with me. I was SO lucky to get Barbi!! I can never
say 'thank you' enough to Katja & Tiina for sending daddy
Aatu to USA and to Susan & Kevin for sending this Stripey
Princess back to Finland. Barbi is, of all my dogs, the
most loved one. I love her temperament (she is both very
outgoing and social, and steady w/strangers), and her
physical qualities, as well. Barbi has sensitive soul and
big warm heart, but she can still be stubborn and demanding
basenji when she wants to :-) She just loves everyone and
wants to be loved by everyone!
Barbi is proud mom for Bulldobas A-litter (born 12th Dec.
2002). After puppies were born ownership of Barbi was
transferred to me. I hope Barbi will leave her unique
temperament & physical qualities also in her future
breedings. Barbi will be mated in autumn 2004.
Barbi really is 'once in a lifetime dog' for me!! -

Here at Calypso we were extra-excited about the
coming of the 2nd Aatu x Sunny litter since one of those
pups, if a brindle girl, was destined for exportation to
Finland to Tiina's BULLDOBAS kennel. As luck & nature would
have it, the boys were all reds and the girls in the litter
were brindles. Many, many pictures were emailed and
surface mailed to Finland for Tiina to choose from. In the
meantime, the girls were called 'Barbi' and 'Cocoa'...we
were sure Tiina would pick the girl we called Barbi, but
then she decided on Cocoa!
To this day, when we discuss Barbi at our Vet's office, we
call her Cocoa-Barbi because we had to change all the vet
records re: the litter, AND we had to change the puppies'
names! During that time, both girls had two names... the
"old" Barbi's new owner picked the name "Ajali", and so we
had 'Barbi-'jali' and 'cocoa-Barbi' running around.
When I call Finland to talk to Barbi (well, Sanna-maija,
but of COURSE I am calling to talk to my grandbaby!!!), I
still call her Cocoa-Barbi and she knows right away
GRANDMA!!! is on the phone! sigh. My baby!
What's great about Barbi?? she has beautiful brindle
patterning. For those who do not know, 'BRINDLE' is NOT a
color, brindle is a color PATTERN, so its inheritance is
complex. Good breeders will try and simplify this process
by using red basenjis with exceptional quality of the base
color. Beautiful pigmentation, and great color behind the
dog's genetics are a must. The brindle being used should
also have an exceptional quality to its base red.
Personally, I like the ORANGE base as I think it imparts
the most striking background to the striping. And then
there is the striping: we want them DISTINCT, NOT SMUTTY.
It's very hard to get, but try we must. Although Barbi's
chocolate lines are somewhat smeared around her face, on
the rest of her body, they are exceptionally distinct and
clear. They form a chevron pattern down her back. I think
S-M has this picture that we took down at our pond in
beautiful afternoon lighting on Barbi's own website.
Barbi is put together exactly right - so right that in
looking at her movement picture, included here, you can see
that her topline is exactly level, and her paws are exactly
meeting, toe-to-toe underneath her in the flying trot. You
cannot get this without all angles being together, just so.
The 45-degree shoulder layback has to be present, an ideal
rarely achieved. And the configuration of the hips must be
equally as perfect. And she is certifed as "A" (excellent)
in Finland.
Barbi's importance to me is that she brings so much to the
table as a brood bitch, with a truly international
pedigree. Her first litter of all boys/all reds (ooops!
Grandma forgot to phone and tell Barbi to paint some of her
children!) out of the fantastic "Phoebus" show her
incredible potential for future Finnish basenjis.
Her 2nd litter, at Dakarai, out of Bulldobas Phantom
produced 4 fabulous pups, including 2 brindle girls. We brought the red
boy home to Calypso = Dakarai Tikal Calypso. Thank you, Barbi! And now
we have a little piece of our beautiful girl back home with us!
***correct physical attributes and sweet temperament
combine to bring only good things to the table. She is and
should produce: "Beautiful Is As Beautiful Does" for years
to come! - Susan
