Toffee was our keeper brindle girl
from the Aatu x Sunny breedngs.
She was been very slow to mature, but our set up here affords us the
luxury of being able to give dogs all the time they need to 'become'
without getting impatient ourselves and giving up on them. We have
found that Toffee is completely her Daddy's girl when it comes to
showing and it's no use for us to enter her unless Kevin can be on the
lead so she can flirt and prance for him.
However, since marrying in April 2006, Kevin is mostly retired from
showing for awhile, and Kim Byrd of DeWitt,VA has become Toffee's new
'gal pal'. I really thought that Toffee was going to make it hard for
Kim to win her over, but apparently she decided that Kim is "worthy"
and thinks it quite a fine thing to spend the weekends together, along
with those Min Pin things (including #3 in the U.S., "Aces") she also
shows. These dogs never fail to surprise me - just when you think you
know them SO well, they show you a 'new wrinkle'. Gotta love 'em! Kim's
first time in the ring with Toffee, she put a 1 pt win on her. Way to
go, ladies!
With the lack of time here for showing, I changed my focus for Toffee
to getting her UKC title and then retiring her. We started off at the
Carolina Classic down in Hickory in March, and then finished her at
shows held the beginning of May in Chesterfield, VA. Toffee has
been adopted by Kim Noel & Dixon Lee of Charlotte, NC who are also
the owners of Tyger & Shooter's pick-of-the-litter male puppy,
'Bix' (Calypso N'kiru's Night Out). Toffee will mentor her
nephew/grandson (depends on which side of his pedigree you're looking
at!) while he grows up to become a show boy. I know this is a great
retirement home for her - two people to love and cherish her, and a
baby 'senji boy to keep her young at heart (and on her toes!).
==========================
Toffee presented us with her first litter -all girls- in December 2002.
Their personalities are beyond reproach and they are much-loved members
of their families. We kept one for Calypso, "Tyger", who turned out to
be
another slow-to-mature basenji, and just not competitive enough for the
show ring. She does love to course and race, though! The sire of the
litter was our own
Ch.Calypso Kilimanjaro, whose dam is Toffee's maternal granddam, so it
was a nice linebreeding despite all the African,Australian and Finnish
imports in the pedigree.
Toffee has one of the most exquisite heads I have ever seen. From the
front, the angles are just perfect and her dark eyes are liquid pools
of melted chocolate. She is as sweet as candy as well, living up to
both her registered and call names! She is a Daddy's girl
who groomed Kevin until his skin fell off! She will be sure
and do the same to new daddy Dixon.
