Gloria 15 yrs 4 months old ..
IN MEMORY OF OUR FRIEND: Dear Gloria succombed to cancer on May 1,
2004. It was a long, protracted fight on her part, and it was amazing
how much "insult" her body absorbed before her heart and mind accepted
defeat. She weighed less than 10 lbs at her death, and to watch this
skeleton trotting around the property, still the 'queen' in her every
diminished fiber was a lesson in Character. And, oh, boy - she was a
CHARACTER !!!
I will always be thankful that Gloria waited for me to come home from
work before she crossed the Rainbow Bridge. After 15 years + 4 months
together, I would have hated to be denied the chance to say goodbye. As
well, I was there to immediately begin cleaning her up as her systems
loosed themselves. To have had her lying in her own fluids for ANY
length of time would have broken my heart. I was honored to be able to
perform this last, modest task on her behalf. She always had loved
being clean. "Farewell,'Cape'!" (she was nicknamed 'Caped
Crusader' around here due to her appearance in her doggy coats which
were always bigger than was she!)
'Gloria' has been the
kennel's premier escape artist. She never goes away, just
explores the property and sniffs 'the news'. Even at age
15, she is like greased lightening, although her path is
rather zig-zaggy now, but speed is undiminished!
Our two favorite Gloria stories: while w/her
professional handler, the following sight was witnessed -
Gloria attached to the flew(side of the muzzle) of one of
their Great Danes while the Dane whirled around on its
haunches in a circle, repeatedly.... building up enough
force so that as Gloria releases her hold...... she SAILS
over their fence into the ajoining pasture = freedom! Until
they caught this 'act', the handlers had been wondering how
Gloria was always getting loose...!
story 2: Gloria was traveling with the owners of the
stud to whom she was being bred and the most opportune
dates fell on a dog show weekend. The honeymooners
accompany the show retinue, and one morning during a
breakfast stop at McDonald's, Gloria scoots past her
'keepers' and effects yet another escape. Paniced at the
thought of losing someone else's dog for them, the man of
the pair takes off in hot pursuit. Well, as hot as he could
make it. Gloria is cruising far ahead of him, her lead not
threatened in the least. She cuts around and actually heads
back to the van where she is happily allows herself to be
nabbed and crated, while Man-on-verge-of-heart-attack
unknowingly continues his now unnecessary pursuit... Man
still talks of this incident nearly a decade later. Guess
he was kind of upset!
Gloria produced puppies known for their wonderful
temperaments, and so far, none inherited her escape artist
tendencies. CH Calypso Kilmanjaro is a successful stud,
and one of the stars of the Animal Planet's basenji Breed
All About It video. Kili bears an astonishing likeness to
his 5 x great granddam, CH Reveille Ruffles of Rose-bay,
herself on the American brood bitch honor roll. She was
born and showed in the 1960's. Kili's owner is a
horsewoman, and Kili was raised around hunter-jumpers, and
has sat calmly in the bleachers and watched the US Olympic
equestrian trials. No Jack Russells allowed! Kili's
brother, Kryptonite, while sold as a show puppy, was never
shown, but he, too, has been used at stud. He and Kili are
very similar in looks and temperament.
Gloria was bred to half-African brindle, Kibushi Get
Sirius, 'Chris' and gave us our brindle girl, Calypso
Midnight Sun. That african tail kept her out of the show
ring, but my, has she produced beautifully for us! What
Gloria did not possess in her own looks, the genetics of
her parentage certainly seemed to catch up to themselves in
later breedings, and certainly now in further generations.
